Woodside Morris Men's Black Book
"A Handbook of Morris Dances", otherwise known as the "Black Book" was originally compiled by Lionel Bacon as his own 'aide memoire' of Cotswold Morris dances. A former dancer with Cambridge, London Pride, Whitchurch and Winchester (for whom he was a founding member) Morris Men, he was also a member of the Travelling Morrice. His compilation, eventually published in 1974, fast became a virtual morris manual for Cotswold sides across the world, becoming recognised as the most influencial work on the notation of traditional Morris dances since the Morris Dance Books published by Cecil Sharp some fifty to sixty years previously.

This section of our website uses the style and spirit of Lionel Bacon's tome to translate our own dances into notation for both our own records and so that they may be shared with other sides who may wish to dance them. Over the next few months, we intend to update this page regularly to include our entire repertoire of dances.
