Morris Dancing in the Summer

In Summer, Morris teams can be found either dancing outside pleasant (and some not so pleasant) country pubs, and at the weekends you might often find them at a festival or two.

Morris Summer starts with May Day, being May the First, then the festivals get going: usually on the first full weekend of May, with Rochester and Hastings festivals being two of the best attended events. The summer is full of festivals, and if you wanted to, you could spend every weekend at a Morris or Folk festival between May and October.

There is also a number of non-folk or Morris events which sides are often asked to attend, such as school and village fetes, weddings and beer festivals. It is at these dos that sides get the opportunity to raise the funds they need to keep going.

For many sides though, Woodside included, the majority of dancing during the summer is done within the auspices of a country hostelry. Sometimes we dance to the delight of the other punters, and sometimes to their chagrin, but on most occasions people will express some sort of pleasure in the fact that an ancient custom is being continued.

There are few ways in which an Englishman can be more innocently employed than in Morris Dancing and drinking ale of a summer evening.

Woodside's Foreman, Dave Pearse, is an expert instructor, having trained Morris Dancers, both new and experienced, for over twenty years, as well as being a folk dancer of nearly four decades' experience.

During the Winter, Woodside Morris Men meet at 8.00pm on Wednesday nights in the Colne River Rooms at the Pump House Arts Centre Watford. You would be most welcome to come along.
