Wybunbury 1998
|
In 1996 and 1997, we traveled up to Wybunbury to stay with John and Barbara Colbert as a base for the Crewe
and Nantwich Festival. In 1998, the festival changed organisational hands, and John decided to invite us up
for the Wybunbury Fig Pie Wakes instead. The Wakes were a well established tradition that ground to a halt
in the first half of the 20 century, following a rather unfortunate fatality. The event was revived in the
nineties as a way of raising money to finance repair to the town's leaning church tower, all that remains of
the old church.

The Wakes involve a local fair around the base of the tower, with stalls and entertainments, with the
highlight of the event being the pie rolling competition. In Woodside's first year at the event, to dance,
participate and help steward, one of our men, Wayne, chucked his pie the furthest, and won the grand prize!
